Product Review: Kevin Aucoin’s ‘Skin Perfect’ Concealer

If there’s two things I need at all times in my makeup arsenal, it’s a highlight and a concealer. While I am currently obsessed with the CoverFX skin drops (more on that in a different post), I found myself aching for a new concealer, almost like when you’re just kind of hoping for a random one-night standard because you’re tired of the boring, monotonous tone of your relationship. The Nars creamy concealer had become my long-term boyfriend, someone I knew I could depend on, if anything more for the sheer knowledge that he’d never let me down. But I was left wondering…what else is out there? What am I missing? Should I just try something new and return home if things don’t work out?

Yes, I’m still talking about concealers here, people.

So I took a stop at my local Sephora, where I plunged into the various concealers out on market. I personally love trying concealers that have had great reviews from Youtubers and other beauty editors and bloggers, so of course, Kevin Aucoin was a name I had heard time after time. I saw the skin perfecting concealers, stuck in a pot and made of a consistency almost like a thick goo. I’m not sure.IMG_1802

Now, here’s where I insert my little spiel on me and concealers. I don’t like to wear foundation during the day unless it’s a special occasion, I’m going somewhere after work, or there’s a high possibility I have to stunt on my ex (jkkkk). Nonetheless, I don’t sleep much, and I’ve always somewhat had dark circles under my eyes. So, even when I’m playing around in other products, I don’t play with concealer. It needs to be a heavy-duty, brighten, and make me look well rested without drying me out.IMG_1803

So, onto this product. As some of you saw during my instastories, the major pro about this concealer is that it is staying on till the wheels fall off. Even when I started my double cleanse that night to remove the makeup, I found myself really having to put some arm strength in there. Personally, it offers me stability in this new relationship. I know that when I throw you on my face at 8 am, you’re not going anywhere.

While it’s not the most hydrating they come (it is puddy, after all) it didn’t take away or “set” in my mini wrinkles under the eye.IMG_1806

Now, the cons. I had two main issues with this concealer, the first being the shade range. My color was in (()), and I still found that waaaaay too yellow for my skin. Unfortunately, the next shade afterward was so brown, I could have used it for a subtle contour, much less a highlight. I’m not sure what girls in the middle are supposed to do, or rather why brands necessarily prescribe all brown women to be really warm until they get to this shade and then they have to be cool. Though I don’t know what I am (who in this world really knows who they are), I did find that the concealer was going to require some SERIOUS blending out to ensure it didn’t look like a slab of yellow on my face. Thank goodness for the new Laura Mercier translucent powder for brown skin; a little of that, and it looked MUCH better.

The other con I had with this concealer was that it does not move easily. While that’s amazing when you’re on the go all day, it’s problematic when you’re trying to blend it with your makeup. I found myself having to spray my face with rose-water again and again to break the product up enough to move it with my beauty blender. However, it was still more work than I’m used to doing and would like to have to do for a concealer. Foundation? Maybe. But not the concealer that’s already a shade off from my skin.

So, what are my thoughts? I think it’s heavy-duty, definitely a hitter in coverage department. The shade range is lacking and could use improvement, and it’s a product that’s going to require some work on the blending out portion. The good thing I will say is if you’re someone who ideally fits in one of the shade ranges, you’ll find this product can last a VERY long time.

IMG_1807 I dipped my brush in and didn’t even scratch a bit of the surface to get enough for what I needed. I believe in spending money for skin care, not necessarily makeup. However, I could quite possibly use that concealer everyday and not run out before 9 months. Easily. When you look at it cost effectively, it makes more sense for the price tag, which I believe rang out at something like $54 (the most I’ve ever paid for a concealer before).

Soooooo. I love Nars. I’m dying over their new soft matte concealer, and creamy concealer is always going to be bae. But, I think for a while I’ve found something that’s going to give me that “WOW YOU DONT AGE AND YOU HAVE SLEPT FOR 3 YEARS STRAIGHT” amazing finish. I’d recommend this product, just eer on caution re: color and cake-ness. Don’t get caught up in these streets girl.
