So outside of the winter and summer collections, some designers hit the runways for their resort lines, which is usually all about tropics and beach babe attire. Well, I said usually, because then there’s Alexander Wang, who still brings his edgy grunge to the party, no matter the weather.
For his resort show, he not only gave us leather-infused low ponytails and rocker vibes in the heart of NYC, but also a show dedicated to the great of American fashion. “Alex’s show this season is a homage to great American designers,” said Duffy for L’Oréal Paris. “The show is broken down into four different parts and there are corresponding looks for each. Alex really wanted the looks to be very clean, with intricate fine lines. Many of the looks also draw inspiration from the 70s.”
In an interview with Fashionista, Duffy explained “the show is broken down essentially into four parts. The first part is a very structured, slightly ’70s suited overcoat silhouette, and for that we have 14 Black girls, all with braids. There’s two types of braids that we’ve done. Alex wanted a clean silhouette, he wanted a very smooth head because he wanted every silhouette to be very clean and very graphic.“
For the evening, my favorite look of the night were the structured braids, which look like the perfect protective style for the summer. Y’all know that protective styles are great options for the summer, whether you’re heading to the beach or just want to try something different for a while. “This look is all about small intricate braids,” he said. “There are two different braid looks – a spiral one and a central braid with a chevroned pattern..” To achieve the hairstyle, the hair was first braided in small braids to create either a spiral or chevron look. Depending on the look, the braiding process took upwards of six hours to achieve!
Of course, we know that a style needs a bit of hold to keep it together. Once the braids were complete, the hair and scalp were completely saturated in L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Boost It Volume Inject Mousse., which is a GODSEND for those of us who know, firsthand, how tight braids can first feel. It loosened the hair slightly for the models and also locked braids and baby hairs in place.
What do you guys think of the look? Feeling the braids for the summer?
