We are dedicating the whole post to New York Fashion Week! A lot of people always ask me questions about New York Fashion Week, I get a lot of DMS on Instagram and on Twitter, and even on Facebook and LinkedIn: How do you get into fashion week? How do you do this? How do you do that? How do I manage doing all the things that I do and make it happen?
What is New York Fashion Week?
So New York Fashion Week well, fashion month as a whole happens twice a year. You always have your Fall and Winter season, which is actually happening right now in the month of February. And then you have Spring and Summer Collection, which happens in September. A lot of people don’t understand why that is. But fashion month used to be set up where designers would show their collections to editors and stylists six months in advance, so they could put that kind of content into their magazines. For buyers, they got to see a little bit about what was to come. And they got to scout what they wanted to actually put into the stores before it hit public audiences and for editors, we kind of got to see a little bit about what are the new makeup trends, the new hair trends. Nowadays, it doesn’t always work that way.
A lot of designers are actually moving into a see now by now model, which means that immediately after you see the clothes on the runway, they may work with like a third party outlet to be able to just provide the clothes so that you can immediately buy and a lot of people have different feelings about that model. I guess in some way, it sort of allows designers to see the immediate effects of what do people want right now, and you can kind of see, okay, I don’t have to wait six months to see what people respond to in the collection. Also, I mean, you know, you see a really, really sick fur coat or whatever on the runway. You want that bad boy name. You don’t have then you don’t want to have to wait. And so that is sort of been sort of the transition for some designers. Not all of them, obviously abide by that. But the role of fashion month has changed drastically over the years.
Who goes to fashion month?
So, who goes to fashion month? That is another loaded question that has changed drastically over the years.
Nowadays, it can literally be anyone. Oftentimes, it’s clout chasers. They know that the street style photographers are usually outside the venues getting content.
How do you get around to shows?
Ubers get really, really expensive out here. Like this season, I utilized the MTA. I went off and put money so I had an unlimited weekly and I think I took Ubers maybe twice. And one of them was because of the fact that it was raining and it was like pouring down. I was like, I’m not walking to the train station. But other than that, if it hadn’t, I would have definitely hiked my little butt up to the train station and then have just walked from there because public transportation gets very expensive, especially if you do not have a sponsor behind it. But for me, you know, I can be up early in the morning and at one show, and then I may have either a show right afterward or I may have a gap. Usually in that gap period is when I’m uploading content to social media. So that’s on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter. I’ve also gotten back on LinkedIn and then also Pinterest, optimizing the content for SEO purposes, but then also interacting with the brand.
Why do people post in real time?
I can get the right video content, but then you go home and then you still have this content to work on. I am slowly figuring out how to sort of do this so that things can still go up the day of, if not the morning right after. But sometimes when you’re not getting home until like 11 o’clock or midnight, then all of a sudden, it’s like, I’m so exhausted, I think I’m gonna like pass out right now. But then you don’t want to wait too long with that content. Because by the time you get it up, especially if it’s been days later, everybody else has already covered it. Everyone else has already covered the designer, everyone else has already shown the photos. And for the site, especially, you’re kind of competing against the SEO algorithms that exist on Google search.
