HERE’S HOW GOODWILL IS HELPING OUR COMMUNITIES AND OUR CLOSETS

I’ve been a heavy-time thrifter for almost a decade now. I never liked looking like anyone else, so finding pieces that had a ton of personality that could also express who I am as a person was key to shopping. Plus, I like shopping, so going to the malls only to find one or two little things — unreasonably priced, mind you — wasn’t cutting it for me.

When I started shopping at Goodwill, I loved how it felt like an adventure hunt, scouring the aisles to see what I could find at a discounted price. I will admit that led to me also spending a LOT more money because every week I was going to see what new inventory they had and to be the first to look, #ShoppingProblemsBeLike. But as I got older, and more involved in community service, activism, and ensuring that my money was going to places and things I believe in, the more I realized that Goodwill’s brand mission is actually pretty dope.

First of all, 87 cents on EVERY dollar spent at Goodwill goes towards job training and employment.

That’s amazing when you think about people who are struggling to get back into the workforce due to unforeseen or unrewarding circumstances. THEN, they have specified work in various communities, including for the deaf and those suffering with hearing loss.

Last year alone, they serviced more than 10,000 people, which in and of itself is commendable.

This holiday season, I got to work with Goodwill to find a holiday outfit to wear to all my crazy holiday parties. I wanted to show people that you can find cute, name brand items that are inexpensive and in great shape. Let’s be real — there’s still a weird stigma around thrifting that really should end. I found this jumpsuit, originally from H&M, on the Goodwill rack and it was $4!!!!!!! I also found a bunch of dresses and tops that I can wear to church, work, or even on a casual Saturday when I’m hanging out with friends.

As a curvy girl, I like that I can find things at the thrift store that I can belt, cut, sew, or hem. Plus, you may just spot a vintage piece or something that’s super sequined-up, just like this blazer I also found:

Well, I’m done fangirling over the amazingness of Goodwill. Sustainable fashion is having a ‘moment’ right now, but we should all work to incorporate more sustainability in our lives (especially us New Yorkers who really don’t have the space), plus who doesn’t like to save a bit more money when they shop anyways?

Anyways, check out goodwill.org to see what Goodwills are in your local area. You can also see the programs and services each has to offer. Oh, and check them out for holiday shopping and even home decor. They’ve got a whole world of amazing goods. Happy holidays!
