NYFW Day 1: V Files

For day one of New York Fashion Week this season, I decided that all I wanted to do was V Files. This season, I decided to space things out just a bit, because I’m working on a few different projects and ultimately in a different headspace. I love fashion week, but a lot has changed around editors and access to shows. Many things feel like it’s just a popularity contest, and about who knows who. People take a LOT of things for IG or for the clout, and while that’s fun in the moment, the reality is as a journalist, I want to find what’s happening in the space because that’s what I do. Is fashion evolving and changing? Absolutely. But do I believe there should still be checks and balances in place? Maybe. But more on that later.

This season, fashion and music collided at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The show was in collaboration with Depop, and four emerging designers had the opportunities to show during NYFW. There were musical performances by Rico Nasty, Erika Jayne and Brooke Candy, as well as YG. It immediately felt like I was in a Travis Scott music concert, as ravers and dancers collided in the aisles with bop after bop. Oh and the clothes? Flawless.

Makeup for the show was done in partnership with MAC Cosmetics (who were gracious enough to invite me to the show), and each collection boasted a different aesthetic, from wild and free to tame and clean. UV lights were used on some models to pull the full holographic pigments from highlighters applied to the skin, creating almost a liquid-veil on the models. For other models, their skin was matte and poreless, reflected with a dark, vampy lip to match with the grunge aesthetic.

I’ll update this post with more details on the clothing and makeup details of the night!
