Today, Rihanna’s official Vogue Arabia issue is out on stand!
The look had been circulating for a little bit on social media, where everyone got a sneak peak inside not one, but two, covers for the iconic spread. The Egyptian-themed spread, shot by Greg Kadel, shows Ri channelling none other than Queen Nefertiti, who was instrumental in women’s rights even back in Ancient Egypt days.
Though there was quite a bit of backlash on Rih choosing to channel Queen Nefertiti (some screamed cultural appropriation, which, whatever), Vogue Arabia’s editor Manuel Arnaut sorted things out a bit by saying that they were “dedicating the issue to strong and dynamic women who are changing the world.”
He continued: ‘Rihanna, our cover star, is one of them. Not only is she one of the most successful pop icons ever, shaping the entertainment industry with her powerful tunes and unique sense of style, she is also an advocate for diversity. ‘With a crown designed by Faeth Millinery, Rihanna pays homage to this unforgettable queen, who still reigns as one of Ancient Egypt’s most celebrated figures.”
Personally, I don’t see how channeling a Queen figure, who has become metaphoric of strength and power, was appropriation. The most ludicrous statements were those that said Rihanna wasn’t “African,” so she couldn’t wear a crown. But last time I checked…
Anyways, for the photoshoot, she sports a turquoise headpiece, along with metallic dresses and colored coats, Gucci snakeskin jackets (because is it really a shoot without Gucci?) and a smokey makeup look.
Of course, the styling of the shoot was vital, and none other than celebrity stylist Anya Ziourova was called for the job.
