I Spoke At Columbia University And Shared How To Make Your Dreams A Reality!

Hey y’all! It seems like it’s been a long time since I gave a little #BTS snapshot of what I’ve been up to (which you could find on my Instagram, btw). Back in January, I had the amazing opportunity to speak to a group of young women at Columbia University at the She Who Believes conference. It was an amazing moment for everyone involved, but especially for me. As some of you may have known, the same day I spoke at this event, I got a phone call that my godfather had passed. The only solace I found in that moment was knowing that I had done something impactful that day that he would have been proud of.

You see, I don’t think I have a pretty conventional path into my industry. I was utilizing blog posts and other unconventional tactics to get my door in the door long before it became the ‘popular’ thing to do. Before being an outsider was cool. All I ever wanted to do was empower other people in their callings, all while lending my voice to the need for more visibility of black and brown people in the fashion industry.

I can sometimes get in my own head, well, I often get in my own head. But I thank God for the journey I’ve been on — the good or the bad, it’s prepared me to do events like this where I can give back.

I was ecstatic to speak at this conference, where I got to share my tidbits on building clout in the industry and how to manifest your dreams into a reality. Of course, it’s not always the easiest thing, even when you wake up and go to bed every night knowing what you should be doing. The thing about purpose is you want to find it while alive, but once you find yours, you realize that it still takes a lot of work to make it happen.

My one piece of advice, for everyone there and all those reading this, is to fight for your fairytale and keep pressing forward. There may be moments that it seems bleak or days you want to throw in the towel, but there’s something divinely destined inside of you. The world is truly waiting on you.

I’m so happy you were able to speak at Columbia University on behalf of TBM. Yes, your godfather would have been very proud of you.
