Happy Tuesday my lovely misfits!
After a long weekend back at my wonderful Alma Mater, Howard University, I am back in full swing, gearing up for some awesome content I have coming to you guys. But today, I’m doing a quick think piece (or something of the sort) on creating your own opportunities when it seems the door is closed.
So, as some of you know, I’ve had the opportunity to work for some pretty large brands. While that was great, the opportunities didn’t come overnight and the opportunities for TheBlondeMisfit CERTAINLY were not quickly given. I’m always a bit freaked out and slightly cringing when people say that I am “lucky”, predominately because luck suggests a random cause of events working in your favor. It does not suggest intent, determination, drive, or execution.
I have never been lucky because I’ve always had to work extremely hard. However, one of the biggest lessons I learned (perhaps early on) was that if an opportunity doesn’t serve you, you can create your own. While working at large brands, organizations, and companies serve some well, who is to say you’re not meant to go against the grain and forge your own path? Tell your own story? Make your own impact on the world?
I have always been a chick who wanted to march to the beat of her own drum when I didn’t like the tune of someone else’s. I have never waited on someone else to give me a yes, I have always found a way to make
Imagine if your favorite people, from Oprah to Ava Duvernay, Lena Waithe to Viola Davis, Vanessa De Luca to even BEYONCÉ had just done the norm of what was in front of them. Imagine if they had never challenged what was possible, or what their contribution could be?
Yes, it can feel scary and honestly it is meant to. The idea of a weight on your shoulder that no other can fill requires you to them make decisions for others besides yourself. However, when one door closes, you can always make your own door if you don’t feel like coming through the window! Never let someone tell or convince you that your dreams are not worth pursuing. In fact, they are the reason we are meant to live. When TheBlondeMisfit got started, people used to bash me and say that I wasn’t a “insert this site” or “insert that site”. That opportunities others had enjoyed were not opportunities that were made for “girls like me” or for people with “no experience in the industry.”
What’s a dream you’re not pursuing but know in your heart you should?
