5 Things You Should Never Do With Your Boss

No matter how lax your boss may appear, there is such a thing as TOO comfortable. So what’s the deal breaker and what’s the sealed deal? What are some things you should never do with your boss, or a coworker in general (because really, who knows anyone’s intentions>) Below are five things you should know not to do around your boss, or if you do…well, honey, I don’t know about that.

1.     Tell ALL Your Business. I get it. Some people get to know their boss and realize that their boss wants to be their friend. Yes, it’s important to be friendly with the boss, but your boss is not your bestie. I know others will not hold the same sentiment, but your boss is not the person you boohoo to about your ex, go to happy hours with and call in the middle of the night for the most random of things. Professional, Misfit.

2.     Follow them on Social Media. So unless your social media fits exactly with the company, you shouldn’t really be adding your boss on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. The last thing you need is your boss calling you in Monday morning to discuss the photo of you doing the splits with a bottle of Hennessy in your hand on Instagram. Well, that’s another story for another day, but try not to post those kinds of things anyway.

3.     Office gossip stays away. Don’t tell your boss what’s going on in the office. Like, no. Although you may be finding yourself being like a teacher’s pet or your boss’s inside eyes, you never know 1) who knows who, or 2) when your boss may act out on the things you’re telling them. Awkward moment: If you told your boss about your coworker who did XYZ and how she’s ABC, and then you find out your boss is her best friend. Womp.

4.     Being Too Abrasive. It’s good to talk to your boss about your dreams and aspirations, and there’s nothing wrong with telling your boss how you genuinely feel. HOWEVER…there is such a thing as too much honesty and too much info. If your boss asks you a question about the latest business partnership, I’m sure they genuinely want your opinion. But for you to just come into your boss’s office and tell them they look fat today and that their sweater doesn’t highlight their skin tone…yeah…not really a good set up for a positive future. When in doubt, keep it shut until asked for your opinion. 🙂

5.     Try to outshine your boss. I know this should be a given, but I can just see it now. The VP comes in and calls a business meeting. Your boss is talking and you interject to tell them they are either wrong or to give your opinion to override theirs. Yes, it’s nice to show off your skills sometimes. But know when to hold them and when to fold them. Never make your boss feel like you are competing with them or for their job. You’ll be out of there faster than a bad temp.

So those are my tips, Misfits! What tips can you offer on things you should never do with the boss?
