I think one of the things I dislike about the winter, aside from the freezing chill that New York brings, is how dry my skin gets. I know I’m absolutely not alone in this frustration where you wash your face at night, put on your thickest night cream, only to find that when morning comes, your skin is flakey, potentially irritated, and confidently dry.
Trust me, it’s the worse.
Over the past month or so, I’ve been on the go and doing a LOT of running around. Between apartment hunting, events, fashion week, speaking engagements and more, my skin has honestly been on the struggle bus. Recently I’ve been able to get her under control, and so I’m going to share with y’all a few things I’ve been doing and how I’ve been seeing a difference. If you’ve used any of these products, def let me know!
Glossier’s milky jelly cleanser
I fell in love with this gentle cleanser for my skin and haven’t put it done yet. Not only is the size conducive to traveling or just when you need to throw it in the bag, but the product itself is made up of five skin conditioners which then leave your skin clean but also hydrated. In the wintertime, I don’t want to use things that strip my skin too much. I need as much moisture as I can get.
The Body Shop vitamin E serum
This stuff ain’t nothing BUT the truth. The vitamin E keeps my skin plump and moisturized, and the serum also works to promote intense hydration while I sleep. I love it and feel like it’s the perfect addition to my nighttime routine. It’s a bit on the pricey side for The Body Shop, but a little goes a long way and I can definitely get a few months out of one bottle.
Epara face oil
Despite its hefty price tag, this face oil is a game changer in my book. I don’t need to use a lot before I feel like my skin soaking up all the ingredients in there. I also love the brand’s face cream, which is thick and creamy and perfect for night hydration. However, if you want to make that ONE splurge, go for the face oil.
Good ole’ hydrocortisone cream
I’m someone with extremely sensitive skin, mostly because I have pretty severe allergies and sinuses. When the weather changes or becomes extremely dry, it can irritate my allergies, thus increasing the histamine in my body, and boom. Irritated face. I love to take some hydrocortisone cream (which reduces the flared histamines on the skin) and put just a bit on my face at night. The next morning, I find that a lot of the bumps and texture that I thought was just a bad breakout really was an allergic reaction to something. Note: I don’t use this product every day or even every other day. A cortisone cream is a steroid, so minimal usage should be applied to this so you don’t do permanent damage.
Water in a bowl (no, seriously)
I know y’all weren’t expecting this, but I’ve noticed that a good night’s sleep instantly makes your skin and face look better. Now, in the wintertime, many of us have heaters that are blasting dry, hot air into our rooms, sucking all the moisture out. What I like to do is take a big bowl (like a cooking bowl or a foot soak bowl) and fill it with water. Just place it somewhere in the room you know it won’t spill, and watch how your sleep naturally improves! The water disperses throughout the night into the air, sort of adding moisture back into the room. I know there’s an actual science to this, but tried-and-true methods work just as good for me.
