Janelle Monáe’s Makeup And Hair Look at the 2019 Met Gala

I loved the makeup looks we saw from this year’s Met Gala, which tapped into the theme of camp and what that means for fashion, beauty, and culture. I especially loved Janelle Monáe who served us not only a whimsical outfit, but stunning makeup as well. Jessica Smalls, Monáe’s makeup artist for the night, shared with TheBlondeMisfit how she created this luxe makeup look, using PURE and Herbivore products. “Janelle’s Met Gala makeup had to shimmer and shine,” Smalls told TheBlondeMisfit.

“I wanted the cameras and light to catch the sophisticated glitter pop of her eyes and the radiant glow from her skin. I wanted Janelle to look like she was going to a ball hosted by Michelle Obama.”

To start, Smalls first worked on skincare, which we all know is vital for a flawless makeup application. She first applied the Prism Exfoliating Glow Potion to moisturize the skin, followed by a mixture of the Emerald Deep Moisture Glow Oil with some bronzer for an added glow. To set Janelle’s face before application, she used Herbivore’s Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist.
Next came the makeup! Jessica primed Janelle’s face, a must if you’re looking to get long wear out of your foundation, especially in front of those glam lights. To prep her face, Smalls used the 100% PURE Luminous Primer to keep the skin soft and keep the makeup long-lasting. She next went in with the 100% PURE Fruit Pigmented Healthy Foundation, mixing shades Mousse and Cocoa together and blending it out on the face. She corrected any flaws with the 100% PURE 2nd Skin Concealer in Shade 6.

Her Eyes

One of my favorite parts of the makeup look was the eyes. For the eyes, Jessica started out with a mix of colors from the 100% PURE Fruit Pigmented® Rose Gold Palette. Then, she layered several colors on top: Bronze in her cease and Teddy in her lid. She lined the full eye with 100% PURE Creamy Long Last Liner in Blackest and finished with 100% PURE Fruit Pigmented® Ultra Lengthening Mascara in Black Tea for full, dramatic lashes. To add sparkle, she put some pink glitter on each lid for a dazzle. Jessica completed the look with a set of Lashify lashes, which added depth and volume for this epic look.

Outfit

Christian Siriano posted a photo on his Instagram showing us the #BTS sketches that went into making Janelle Monae’s outfit, one that absolutely reminded me of a chic and sophisticated Mad Hatter. Her look was actually 3D, and the eye on her left boob actually winks. Talk about innovative!

Her hair

And her hairstylist, Nikki Nelms, graced us with a few images of Janelle’s hair from all angles. Adorned with red kisses throughout, Janelle’s hair was pulled back in a sleep pony and left with loose ends at the bottom. Her whole outfit is 3D and pretty sick — check it out:

So, what do you think of Janelle’s look for the night?
