Universal Standard x Rodarte Just Dropped A Plus-Size Collection And It’s SOOO Good

First of all, y’all know I love me some Universal Standard. I’ve shared them many times on my IG (@theblondemisfit), mostly because they have been so instrumental in the growth and positive advocacy of plus-size bodies in the fashion industry, and honestly, if we as a group are gunning to win, then we must work collectively and without resolve.

Universal Standard

I’ve supported US for some time now, even attending their New York events where I’ve been blessed to be amongst creators Polina Veksler and Alexandra Waldman. You can imagine how I felt when they announced that the fashion brand had launched a collaboration with luxury fashion house Rodarte. The collection is a ready-to-wear collection that comes in sizes 00-40, for women to experience, shop and share. Umm, excuse me?!

I’d like to mention right here that the average U.S. woman wears a size 16, despite the fact the runways, brands, campaigns, and a lot of people in general still skew towards “sample size” women.

Nonetheless, this Universal Standard and Rodarte collection not only prove that your body size and style levels are dependent on one another, but more importantly, a luxury brand can create stunning clothes for bigger girls. Point, blank, period. In fact, in the words of Universal Standard, “The Rodarte x Universal Standard collection is a proof point of Universal Standard’s overarching mission of FASHION FREEDOM, where size is irrelevant, style is the only filter, and fashion is created with everyone in mind. In a world where the average size of a woman in the United States is a 16, the collection demonstrates what the future of fashion looks like.” And what exactly does this collection look like? Well, it includes a dress, jumpsuit, skirt and blouse in black, white, red, and rose.

“We believe size should be an irrelevant consideration for women when making fashion choices,” Polina Veksler, Universal Standard co-founder and CEO, said in a press release. “Through this collaboration we are taking a step toward giving more women access to designer clothing and we are thrilled to be further expanding our mission by collaborating with a high fashion brand.”

“It shouldn’t be a far-fetched possibility for women of all sizes to have access to contemporary, ready-to-wear fashion, and experience supreme quality and design when buying clothing,” — Alexandra Waldman, Universal Standard co-founder and Chief Creative Officer.

Veksler and Waldman created Universal Standard in 2015 to obliterate the dividing line of size—a style barrier which, until now, determined who had the privilege and freedom to dress with quality and style, and honestly, changed the industry FOREVER with its promise to create real opportunities for all women (which I have had the pleasure of seeing firsthand).

The collection

The collection, which retails for $150-240, will be available both online as well as Universal Standard’s Soho location, which only adds to the fun and experience of shopping and truly having a memorable experience with your clothes. The founders of Rodarte, the 2005 luxury brand that has won a sweeping amount of awards over the years, feel this way as well. “We are excited to partner with Universal Standard to create this amazing collection,” said Kate Mulleavy, Rodarte. “We are passionate about working with women that inspire us creatively and we love every style in this collection.”

“We have been fans of Universal Standard from the beginning,” Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte. “It’s been a dream to bring our designs to life and to collaborate with the team on this capsule. We are so excited to see how the pieces will be styled and experienced by all the amazing women that wear them.”
