COVERGIRL JUST LAUNCHED A MAKEUP COLLECTION DESIGNED TO CELEBRATE WOMEN OF COLOR

I’ve loved Covergirl for a long time — whether it was from their coveted selections of who would be a Covergirl (my favorites have been Maye Musk, Ayesha Curry, Issa Rae, and of course, Rih), or their consistent growth as a brand over the last few years. I remember going to the drugstore (long before I had big girl dollars) and being able to find a few products — whether it was a setting powder or a foundation — that the brand had, and as a brown girl that meant something to me.

The brand recently released their Full Spectrum collection, which aims to provide products and a line that is specifically made with rich, darker skin tones in mind. “Full Spectrum brings out your truest tones with super rich pigments and hydrating shades that stand out,” said CoverGirl’s press release. “[We] understand that inclusivity goes far beyond shade ranges so we’re providing products for eyes, lips, and face that were designed to pop against darker skin tones.”

The line is extremely broad, and honestly encouraging  to see a brand as big as CoverGirl take a stand on something that actually IS important. I sometimes feel like catering to brown skin is just trendy, but this collection is actually a collection for all. The launch features cosmetics for the eyes, lips and face, and yes, everything is extremely pigmented and geared for all skin tones to be able to wear it.

Thankfully, we will not be disappointed by these products, like their Matte Ambition All Day Shine Free Foundation, which offers medium to full coverage, “transfer-resistant, and provides all-day comfort with oil absorbing powders for a natural matte foundation finish,” according to Ulta. They also have powders (great for setting or if you’re more of an oily type of gal), called the Matte Ambition All-Day Shine Free Powder Foundation, which comes in 12 shades, evens out skin tones, blurs the appearance of hyper-pigmentation and leaves a velvety matte finish.

The beauty brand also gave us some new brightening concealers, which come in six shades and is buildable to a full coverage. In the collection, there’s also a contour and correcting cream palette, a cheek palette, a skin primer that even comes with SPF, a variety of lipstick shades, lip glosses, and eyeshadow palettes.

Taking into account the fact that there is still so much work to be done in the beauty industry for women of color, it’s encouraging to see that some steps are being taken to ensure that there are more affordable options for us!
