Jumping Forward After Setbacks

Blue Ivy may have never seen a ceiling in her (young) life, but do I have anyone in the audience who has? Hello, somebody. Sorry beloveds, couldn’t find this shirt, but I did find a cute denim dress that is quickly going on my “To Get” list. My pants are a bit expensive for some, but there’s an alternative that’s more of a jegging.

For most of us, we don’t have affluent, rich, or even well connected parents or people who can make sure that we never have to go a day without. For many of us, we just gotta hustle. And honestly, if I’m keeping it a stack — cuz y’all know I love to do that — hustlin’ can sometimes have you laid out on the floor, on your back, wondering how you’ve afforded to hit whatever road block you’re in the midst of.

I guess what I’m asking is, has anyone ever had a serious setback?

I’m not talking about those setbacks that you find yourself easily able to get out of, or even the ones that have been inflicted on you by other people. I’m talking about spiritual and mental setbacks, physical setbacks, setbacks that make you say, “You know what, I’m cool. I’m done. I’m not fighting for this anymore.” Have y’all ever had one of those setbacks?

Sometimes you just run into things that really get you down, and I mean, REALLY get you down. You start playing the comparison game, start wondering and thinking what you’re doing wrong, and honestly can start telling yourself that you don’t belong in *insert whatever you’re running away from*. But I’m here to tell you that sometimes, the setback is really the set up for success. Sometimes you just have to fall flat on your face to really become the person you’re supposed to be, and honestly that can sometimes be terrifying. However, press through that fear. Understand that you’re down, but you’re not out. You’re partially set back, but you still have so much that you can give to the world, if you just keep trying. So keep pushing, my little misfit, you’re certainly on your way.
