Jonathan Simkhai’s Fall ’19 Presentation Tapped Into Ukrainian Roots

On Saturday evening, Jonathan Simkhai presented his F/W ’19 collection at New York’s Industria Studios. For the night, 24 models came down the runway in a variety of colors, full of texture and print. The collection was inspired by Simkhai’s maternal grandmother and her life in the Ukraine. Collectively, the presentation was more smooth and narrowed in than Simkhai’s previous collections, however I personally found the nuances, such as the concept of a headscarf or muted silhouettes, encouraging.

Simkhai shared, “The concept of the headscarf is used throughout this fall winter collection and within our custom prints. The silhouettes this season elicit a vintage spirit while equally exuding modern appeal. The traditional headscarves are incorporated into the actual form of the dress; adding elements of innovation and allure. For this collection I spent a lot of time experimenting with new colors ways, fabrications, prints and patterns based on the palette and landscapes seen in Odessa.”

Many of us know Simkhai for his 2015 win of the CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund and early success in the CFDA Fashion Incubator program. Originally starting in NYC, he established his brand in 2010, building out a luxury ready-to-wear collection for the modern woman.
