I Was On TV (Again) And Tips For Being An On-Camera Personality

I am thrilled to announce that I recently had the opportunity to be featured on a television program (Fox32 Chicago, to be exact)! It was an incredible experience and I learned a lot about what it takes to do on-camera work. All 2023, TheBlondeMisfit is reaching for the stars!

First and foremost, being confident in yourself and your abilities is essential. Being on camera can be nerve-wracking, but if you believe in yourself and trust that you are prepared, it will show in your performance.

It’s also important to practice beforehand. I highly recommend doing mock interviews or recording yourself to get a feel for what it will be like on set. You can also practice your body language, facial expressions and delivery. This is even something I’m still working on, as I notice there are certain words and phrases I always repeat. Practice in the mirror or in front of a friend if you can. It gets easier over time.

Another key to success on camera is to be authentic. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. The audience can tell when you’re not being true to yourself. Be yourself, be natural and let your personality shine through. Honestly, this is why I’m falling in love with video. I can just be myself and I don’t have to try to do or be anyone else.

Additionally, being well-prepared is crucial. Research the topic or show you will appear on, so you understand what to expect. And don’t forget to dress appropriately for the occasion. Look up the interviewers’ profiles, find ways to connect with people, and know your material inside and out. One time I had a host go off script and not ask any of the questions in brief. You have to know how to pivot and stay on top!

Lastly, be professional and respectful of the production team. They are there to help you and make sure you look your best on camera. Follow their instructions and be open to constructive feedback. It bewilders me that people feel confident enough to be rude to production. This industry is big but it’s very small. Be good to people.

Overall, it was an incredible experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be featured on television. I hope these tips will help you if you ever get the chance to do on-camera work. Remember to be confident, practice, be authentic, be well-prepared and professional, and you’ll be sure to shine.
